ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO V

PROJECT 1 : PRELIMINARY STUDIES

TAYLOR'S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES

Project 1 Preliminary Studies aims to introduce students on urban design and typologies in relations to architecture studies. The preliminary studies requires students to study and investigate the site of Medan Pasar which include site documentation, site analysis and precedent studies of urban infill, tropical architecture and community library. The purpose of the project is to enable students to understand the urban patterns, forms and contexts of the site based on Kelvin Lynch's  Five Elements of Legibility of Nodes, Paths, Landmarks, Districts and Edges. The preliminary studies of Medan Pasar also requires students to understand the social urban community of Medan Pasar by identifying certain activities, cultures, daily routines, social behaviors and movement patterns of the local community. In this project, we worked as group of 11 people on site to carry out the site analysis and documented our findings of Medan Pasar. We are also required to develop a keyword as a theme or concept for our preliminary studies which our keyword is Intersection. The purpose of the keyword or theme is to enable students to express their perception or intengible feeling towards the site.

TAYLOR'S GRADUATED CAPABILITIES

Project 2 is the continuation of Project 1 Preliminary Studies, in project 2, I am required to design an urban infill project of a 3-5 storey height community library within a 1200 square meter site in Medan Pasar.  Firstly, using the information that are gathered and documented in project 1, I had analysed and identified certain urban issues to develop a design concept for my community library. I found out that the user groups of the site which are local Malaysians, foreign workers and tourist are less sociable within Medan Pasar. The design concept for my community library is adaptation which  the design intention is to enable different user groups to adapt within the library spaces based on their daily lifestyle and their needs. In order to achieve that, common spaces between users groups have to be identified through circulations, activities and interactions. This is to encourage social interactions within users to meet the users’ needs and requirements for them to be familiar within the library spaces.
